DSWD Warns Public of Christmas Gift Survey Scam

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is alerting the public to be cautious of online scams circulating on social media platforms, falsely claiming to offer a Christmas gift in exchange for answering a survey. These posts, often shared on Facebook, are confirmed to be phishing attempts aimed at deceiving individuals and stealing their personal information.

DSWD-Davao has explicitly stated that these online surveys are fraudulent and designed to trick people into divulging sensitive data. This type of scam is particularly prevalent during the Christmas season, where malicious actors exploit the spirit of giving to prey on unsuspecting individuals.

“This Christmas season, a proliferation of ‘fake news’ and various types of scams, especially through social media platforms, is expected. These schemes often misuse the name of the DSWD, targeting innocent or vulnerable individuals with promises of cash assistance or so-called “cash gifts’,” stated DSWD Regional Director Vanessa Goc-ong in a statement to SunStar Davao on December 3, 2024.

Director Goc-ong firmly advises the public to disregard these deceptive schemes and to avoid clicking on any suspicious links. It is crucial to remember that the DSWD does not distribute Christmas cash gifts or financial assistance through online surveys or without adhering to established guidelines and legal procedures. Any claim suggesting otherwise should be treated as a potential scam.

To ensure the legitimacy of information, DSWD-Davao urges the public to verify any news or announcements circulating on social media through their official Facebook page. This is the most reliable way to confirm the authenticity of DSWD programs and avoid falling victim to misinformation.

The scam posts falsely claim that the DSWD central office is offering “P7,000 financial assistance as their Christmas gift” upon completion of an online survey. The agency vehemently refutes this claim, emphasizing, “There is no truth to the circulating link claiming that the DSWD is giving a CHRISTMAS GIFT worth P7,000 in exchange for answering a survey questionnaire.”

The DSWD reiterates its commitment to public service and urges everyone to remain vigilant against online scams, especially those impersonating government agencies to exploit vulnerable individuals during the holiday season. Always verify information through official DSWD channels to protect yourself from fraud and misinformation.
