Thoughtful Godparents Gifts: Nurturing Faith and Connection

My daughter anticipates a special package from her godmother each June, a heartwarming tradition that marks the anniversary of her baptism. In her younger years, these Godparents Gifts were often books, carefully chosen stories to inspire and educate. As she grew, the books remained, but occasionally, a different treasure would appear. This year, she received two necklaces—a cross and a spirit symbol from Iona and Taizé—profound and meaningful godparents gifts that resonated deeply. Each present served as a tangible reminder of her baptismal vows and the enduring love of both God and her godmother.

This year’s thoughtful godparents gifts came with an added blessing: quality time.

A couple of months after the baptism anniversary, my daughter’s godmother visited and took her out for lunch. While seemingly simple, this lunch was a significant gesture, especially for a 13-year-old navigating the complexities of adolescence. At this pivotal age, children need unwavering love and support. The time her godmother dedicated to that lunch was a powerful expression of love in action. My daughter returned home feeling deeply cherished and reassured of her godmother’s and God’s unconditional love. This simple act underscored the profound impact of thoughtful godparents gifts that extend beyond material items.

Neither the lunch, nor the necklaces, nor any of the previous godparents gifts were obligatory. Often, expectations for godparents are minimal. Many simply attend the baptism ceremony, make promises perhaps not fully understood, and then fade into the background. Regrettably, this has been the experience for many, including myself in some instances.

However, my daughter’s relationship with her godmother has illuminated the transformative potential of this role. It has shown me firsthand the profound difference a devoted godparent can make in a child’s life. Godparents possess a unique opportunity to positively influence a child simply by being present and engaged, whether through meaningful godparents gifts, shared meals, or other expressions of care. It’s a special bond, one that I am committed to honoring more fully in the future and will never again take for granted. The impact of godparents gifts, in all their forms, serves as a constant reminder of this vital connection.

Reflecting on the Godparent Role with Your Child

Engage in meaningful conversations with your child to deepen their understanding of the godparent relationship:

  • What does baptism signify in your life?
  • What does it mean to you to be baptized into faith?
  • Who is your godparent, and how would you like to strengthen your bond with them?
  • What questions do you have for your godparent about baptism and your faith journey?

Practical Steps for Parents and Godparents

  • For Expectant Parents: Choose godparents thoughtfully. Select individuals who will embrace the spiritual dimension of this role and actively nurture your child’s faith.
  • For Parents and Grandparents: Initiate conversations about baptism with your children. Explore their understanding and encourage them to ask questions. Reaffirm their baptismal identity by making the sign of the cross on their forehead, reminding them of God’s and your unwavering love.
  • For Godparents: Embrace your significant role. Acknowledge the anniversary of your godchild’s baptism each year, reinforcing your commitment. Send thoughtful godparents gifts that serve as tangible expressions of your love and spiritual guidance. Prioritize quality time with them, demonstrating your active presence in their lives. Your consistent involvement, like God’s love, is a powerful gift in itself. Through your actions, you can embody God’s love and faithfulness in your godchild’s life.
