Discover the Unique Charm of Gay Dolphin Gift Cove in Myrtle Beach, SC

For generations, the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove has stood as a Myrtle Beach landmark, offering an unparalleled shopping experience that goes far beyond the typical souvenir shop. Since the 1940s, this family-friendly destination has captivated visitors with its vast and eclectic collection of treasures, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring Myrtle Beach.

Located conveniently on Ocean Boulevard, just a block south of the iconic SkyWheel and the bustling Oceanfront Boardwalk, the Gay Dolphin is easily accessible and central to the Myrtle Beach action. Finding it is a breeze: simply turn towards the ocean on Mr. Joe White from Highway 17 Business/Kings Highway, turn right onto Ocean Boulevard, and you’ll find this remarkable gift cove on your left.

The story of Gay Dolphin Gift Cove is deeply rooted in the vision of Justin Plyler, who in 1946 foresaw Myrtle Beach as an affordable and entertaining vacation spot for families. His dream began with a modest gift shop and a children’s amusement park, evolving over decades into the sprawling emporium it is today. More than just a store, the Gay Dolphin is an attraction in itself, drawing visitors year after year with its unique atmosphere and diverse offerings.

The Plyler family’s entrepreneurial spirit led to the development of numerous attractions in Myrtle Beach, starting with their first oceanfront lot purchase in the early 1940s. Their ventures included the Tom Thumb golf course, various inns, a reptile show, Myrtle Beach’s first aquarium, a monkey exhibit that later became Gorillaland, a rifle range, Kiddieland with exciting rides, the Gay Dolphin Park featuring the Wild Mouse roller coaster, and of course, the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove.

The original gift shop, initially named Shell Craft, laid the foundation for what would become the Gay Dolphin. Though Hurricane Hazel tragically destroyed the original structure in 1954, the Pylers rebuilt, starting with the oceanfront section and gradually expanding. The iconic tower that distinguishes the Gay Dolphin on the Myrtle Beach skyline was added during the expansion in the early 1960s, solidifying its place as a beloved landmark.

Inside the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove, prepare to be amazed by three levels brimming with an astonishing variety of items. From an extensive selection of sea shells in every imaginable color and form to apparel, home décor, unique collectibles, sparkling jewelry, and even genuine shark teeth, there’s something to pique everyone’s interest. Enhancing the experience are seven distinct photo opportunities scattered throughout the store, featuring whimsical figures like a life-size Yeti, Elvis Presley, Egyptian guardians, and pirates – perfect for creating memorable vacation snapshots.

The Gay Dolphin truly lives up to its reputation as more than just a gift shop; it’s an immersive shopping adventure and a key part of the Myrtle Beach experience. Whether you are searching for the perfect souvenir, a unique gift, or simply a fun place to explore, the Gay Dolphin Gift Cove in Myrtle Beach, SC, promises a memorable visit.

Don’t Miss

I have been coming to Myrtle Beach since 1956 and The Gay Dolphin was one of the first places we visited on the Boardwalk. We have returned nearly once a year since our very first visit and we always stop in this shop. Recommend to all that visit Myrtle Beach as this place is a landmark. Great place to have your shark teeth made into a necklace.
