Rediscovering the True Meaning of Christmas Gifts: Honoring Jesus and Spreading Love

The tradition of exchanging Christmas Gifts finds its roots in a biblical story of wise men who journeyed far to honor the newborn Jesus. As the Bible recounts, upon finding Him, “they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11). This act of reverence and gift-giving by the wise men serves as a powerful precedent for our contemporary Christmas customs.

Over time, the essence of these original Christmas gifts has been somewhat overshadowed. While the wise men offered their treasures as acts of worship and deep respect for Jesus, modern gift-giving can often become centered on materialistic desires and personal gratification. It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy of shopping and receiving, potentially losing sight of the deeper significance behind the act of giving. Instead, we can re-align our perspective to reflect the wise men’s example, viewing Christmas gifts as opportunities to express genuine love and appreciation for others, mirroring their honor for Jesus.

Christmas, at its heart, is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ over two millennia ago. This celebration is profound because His birth represents God’s ultimate gift to humanity. Through Jesus, God demonstrated unparalleled love, as John 3:16 beautifully states, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Understanding Christmas gifts within this context allows us to see them as reflections of God’s gift to us.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, it’s important to pause and remember the true spirit of Christmas. Let us strive to keep Christ at the center of our celebrations, including our gift-giving. By doing so, we can transform Christmas gifts from mere material exchanges into meaningful expressions of love, respect, and remembrance of God’s indescribable gift, as mentioned in 2 Corinthians 9:15, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” This Christmas, may our gifts reflect the spirit of the wise men, honoring Jesus and spreading love to those around us.
