Discover the Story Behind Learning Express Toys & Gifts: From a Mother’s Dream to a National Franchise

Sharon initially considered selling her existing retail tile business to pursue this new venture. The opportunity to solidify her vision came when she served as president of the board at Groton Community School. Presenting her detailed Learning Express business plan as a fundraising initiative, Sharon aimed to stabilize the school’s finances without increasing tuition fees. This innovative approach laid the groundwork for her entrepreneurial journey. Just a few months later, in March 1987, Acton, MA, became home to the very first Learning Express location, marking the realization of Sharon’s dream.

Building on this initial success, Sharon opened her first solely-owned Learning Express Toys & Gifts store in Needham, MA, just six months later in September. During the preparations for the Needham store launch, she encountered an article in Inc. Magazine about the franchising model. Recognizing the personal fulfillment of business ownership, Sharon realized that franchising could be an excellent strategy to expand Learning Express while offering similar satisfaction to other families. In 1990, she placed an advertisement in the Boston Globe highlighting toy store franchising opportunities, successfully selling the first Learning Express franchise in Andover, MA.

The growth of Learning Express Toys & Gifts continued steadily. In 1998, the company hosted its inaugural company convention, a testament to its expanding network. Simultaneously, Learning Express transitioned from its historic beginnings in a Groton, MA schoolhouse to a newly renovated office building in Devens, MA, accommodating its increasing operations. The year 1999 marked a significant milestone when Entrepreneur Magazine recognized Learning Express as one of the Top 500 Franchises in the nation. This prestigious award has been bestowed upon the company multiple times since, underscoring its consistent excellence in the franchising industry.

Today, Learning Express Toys & Gifts proudly stands as the largest family of specialty toy stores throughout the United States. The company’s enduring success is rooted in its commitment to the franchise business model, allowing it to thrive and spread the joy of quality toys and gifts to communities nationwide. From a personal inspiration to a nationwide phenomenon, Learning Express exemplifies how a passion for enriching childhood can blossom into a thriving and impactful business.
