Gifts for Christmas: Rediscovering the True Meaning

Shortly after Jesus was born, wise men journeyed far to honor Him with gifts. The Bible recounts, “they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11). This act of reverence and gift-giving by the wise men is believed to have influenced our tradition of exchanging gifts at Christmas. However, the essence of those original gifts – given to honor Jesus – is often overshadowed today. Christmas gift-giving can easily become self-centered, materialistic, or simply a burdensome obligation. This Christmas, encourage your son to see gift-giving as an opportunity to express love and respect, reflecting on the profound meaning behind it.

Christmas is fundamentally about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ over two millennia ago. We commemorate His birth because it represents God’s ultimate gift to humanity, a demonstration of His boundless love. As John 3:16 states, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Amidst the Christmas bustle, let us refocus on Christ, the heart of this season. Pray for your loved ones, that they may receive God’s indescribable gift of His Son into their lives. “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Corinthians 9:15).
